August 25, 2006, Newsletter Issue #30: Swimming Pool Water Play

Tip of the Week

Even the youngest baby can enjoy the experience of a large swimming pool to cool off in the warm summer months. While young children are not capable of learning to swim, they can begin to build water confidence in a larger swimming pool. A pool toy idea for this early start to swimming is the baby float. With a large variety of types available, it is most important to look for one that is safely balanced, has parent handles and is the appropriate size for your baby. Always keep your young child within an arms length of your body while in the pool and check the safety rating of the baby swimming pool boat you purchase with organizations like www.consumerreports.org.

Older children learning basic water skills in a larger swimming pool will enjoy the built in buoyancy created with child-sized life vests or swimsuits with built in floating pads. My Pool Pal offers a variety of styles of floatation swimsuits designed to safely balance a child in the water. They can play with a pool toy and feel secure on top of the water. Even with this added protection, a young child should still always be closely watched while in or near the water and never left unattended, even for a second.
