January 27, 2006, Newsletter Issue #2: Pregnancy During A Period

Tip of the Week

It is possible to get pregnant during your period. Most women ovulate about 14 days after the first day of their period, but every woman's cycle is somewhat different. You can use a home pregnancy test to determine if you are indeed pregnant, but these tests are most effective at or after the time of your next expected menstrual period, usually about two weeks after ovulation. A blood test in a doctor's office is more accurate and can be performed as early as one week after conception. A doctor should be consulted regarding cramping and heavy bleeding, especially if you think you may be pregnant.
