August 18, 2006, Newsletter Issue #29: Time for Inside Summer Play

Tip of the Week

Even with the traditionally great weather of summer, a day will come when outside playtime is unavailable. Maybe a baby is sick or the temperature is 100 degrees, whichever the reason, it can be particularly hard to escape boredom on an inside summer day.

When the time comes to play inside during the summer an educational toy is beneficial. While outside time provides a baby the chance to explore their senses and physical self, it does not offer much opportunity for intellectual learning. Problem solving toys like puzzles or computer related games are an engaging inside activity. With the variety of products from Leap Pad and V-tech for educational toy learning at all ages, the selection offers parents the opportunity for teaching their children through playtime.

Another inside option is a pretend play game. Let them play in the tub like it was a pool or make a sandbox out of cereal and a plastic tub. Move the furniture back and create a large space in the room for a more active play game like balls or trucks.

Save some inside time throughout your summer for baby book time everyday. Nothing is a better educational toy than a baby book. Try “Baby’s First Words” by Lars Wik to help your child learn to build their vocabulary. “Show Me” by Darcia Labrosse and “Hug” by Jez Alborough are two baby books filled with parental love. Of course, “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown is a classic baby book favorite and a definite must for your own personal library.
