October 16, 2009, Newsletter Issue #142: 'Thirdhand' Smoke and Your Baby

1

Tip of the Week

Research from MassGeneral Hospital for Children shows that infants and children ingest twice as much house dust as adults. This is especially of concern because the chemicals that linger in the air and surfaces after a cigarette is put out, 'thirdhand smoke', can be breathed in by your baby and can be harmful.
So, even when no one is currently smoking around your baby, if there is any smoke chemicals left over from a previously smoked cigarette, your baby could inhale them.
If you smell any smoke when you're with the baby, it's best to move to another area and avoid exposing her to any unnecessary toxins.
